Origami Arts

Center for Early Education

Spring 2025

Dear Families,

In Origami Arts, we’ve been diving into the delicate and imaginative world of paper folding. Our goal is to build fine motor skills, encourage creativity, and help kids experience the joy of transforming a simple square of paper into something entirely new!

We began our first week by introducing the fundamentals of origami through the creation of paper fans. While the folds were sometimes tricky—especially for our younger learners—the kids showed great enthusiasm and curiosity. Many already had some experience with origami, which brought an extra layer of excitement to the room!

In our second class, we explored jumping frogs, inspired by a fun Star Wars clip. The kids began with a simple version of the fold and then chose whether to decorate their frogs or continue with a more advanced version. It was wonderful to see so many students take on the challenge, while others took a more creative route with colors and design.

This week, we increased the level of difficulty. The class voted to create flapping butterflies, which brought lots of joy as the students watched their creations come to life. We had a lovely moment of reflection when we talked about how no two butterflies—or people—are exactly alike, celebrating the beauty of our differences. We ended the session by beginning a Star Wars Millennium Falcon fold with galaxy paper— a project that will be continued in the coming weeks.

Looking ahead, we’ll continue developing our folding skills with new projects like animals, balloons, and Baby Yoda, incorporating more detailed steps and dimensional shapes for our advanced learners. Your folding artists will also begin preparing for our final class art show, where they’ll share an original story featuring an origami masterpiece of their choice! It’s been such a joy watching their confidence grow, and I can’t wait to see how their creativity continues to unfold—literally!

Warmly,

Mary Anne Buckley, Curated Care teacher
