Graphic Novel Making
Poly Prep
Spring 2025
Dear Families,
In our second semester of Graphic Novel Making, I’ve been excited to introduce students to more techniques, such as inking and gesture drawing, as well as a bit of comic book history, including artists like Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.
Students are learning to create storyboards, lettering, characters, and images that tell stories to readers. Does your hero fight crime? Or is she a super genius who builds life-saving technology for people with disabilities for free?
Kiddos are exploring the techniques, terminology, and tools used to make their own graphic novels or “Ashcans,” as they were known in the 1980s. Learning to read and write is a basic tool that many kids have neglected in exchange for computers. Since Anime and Manga are now global phenomena, this class supports students in creating, writing, and having a great time while doing it!
